Bikram Presentation this Sunday!

ah, i have been rather neglectful of my blog lately.  my apologies.  more stories will appear, as i slowly digest and assimiliate the rollercoaster of the last six months of my life…

in the meantime: THIS SUNDAY, FEB 12, i will give a presentation at my church in midtown about Bikram and my experiences (see below).  if you’d like to come, shoot me a message and i’ll give you all the details!

A presentation by Sharon G

February 12: Plaza Room, 1PM
Bikram Yoga Demystified:
-Why did Sharon disappear for 9 weeks this past autumn?
-What might Bikram do for my life, physically and spiritually?

on February 12, directly after brunch, Sharon will offer a presentation including the following:
- her experiences at Bikram Yoga Teacher Training
- what Bikram Yoga IS, and what it Is Not
- how Bikram has deepened her spiritual life
- how this specific yoga practice has tremendous power to heal the body and mind from the inside out
- why virtually Anyone can do it, regardless of age or physical condition
- Q+A session: ask Sharon anything!
- bonus: learn one breathing exercise

In the United States today, one can choose from many forms of the ancient practice of yoga.  However, many require the student to be flexible, strong, young, and healthy.  Unfortunately, many people injure themselves trying things they shouldn’t, doing poses incorrectly or because they are pushed by overzealous teachers (as a recent NYTimes article details).  The Bikram practice, on the other hand, is a completely unique approach that minimizes any chance of injury.  Not only can it be safely practiced by an overweight, diabetic, arthritic 70-yr-old, it will also challenge the most elite, youthful athlete or dancer.

Don’t believe it?  Think there’s no reason you would ever endeavor to try it yourself?  You might be pleasantly surprised.  If nothing else, join us to hear some entertaining stories about the rigorous Teacher Training Sharon endured to become a Certified Teacher of Bikram!

Possible special guest: Denise Nann, owner/ director of the Bikram Studio ONE BLOCK away: BYGC, 226 E 54th btwn 2nd/ 3rd; bikramyogagrandcentral.com

Think you might want to take a class after the presentation?  Bring a jog-bra/ bike shorts/ short leggings/ swim trunks (in other words, lightweight tiny clothes you can sweat in) and accompany Sharon to BYGC for the 4pm Sunday class which can be attended for only $10 donation!  Mats and towels are available to rent at the studio.  Also suggested to bring: fresh underwear for after class, a large water bottle, and a sense of humor.  The class is over by 5:30, and taught by the amazing Jeanne Heaton of NYTimes fame ( http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/fashion/13Mirror.html?_r=1 )

There are nice showers, you can buy water and other drinks there, and chill out afterwards on the beautiful balcony (7th floor!)

in the meantime, you’re welcome to read Sharon’s slowly developing blog, containing essays and stories about her Bikram experience: sharonharlem.tumblr.com
- or come take her class at Bikram Yoga Harlem: 518 W 145th btwn Bway/ Amst; bikramyogaharlem.com

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
